Helping a Friend
If you think a friend is being abused:
- Listen to what your friend has to say, let your friend know you care.
- Let them know you are concerned, be specific. Talk about incidents you have observed and not the relationship in general.
- Offer to get more information. Let your friend know these situations generally do not get better by themselves.
- Be patient, most people leave several times before they are able to separate permanently.
- Let them know they are not alone; one out of five college students have reported at least one incident of abuse in their relationships.
- Get help from resources on campus and in the community, do not attempt to deal with this by yourself.
